Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill

Thursday, October 20, 2022

Millions of people worldwide will practice how to Drop, Cover, and Hold On at 10:20 a.m. on October 20 during Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills

Participate in the Great California ShakeOut on October 20 at 10:20 a.m.

California has more than 37 million people living and working in the state.  A major earthquake could cause unprecedented devastation for residents, businesses, and numerous organizations and city infrastructures.

What we do now here in Monterey Park before a big earthquake will determine what our lives will be like afterwards. In anticipation of an earthquake, the Monterey Park Fire Department encourages everyone to “Be Prepared, Not Scared!”

What better way to learn how to be prepared is to participate in the Great California Shake Out on October 20, 2022 at 10:20 a.m.

People everywhere, such as residents, businesses, schools, throughout California will be conducting an earthquake drill on October 20 at 10:20 a.m. to learn and practice how to “Drop, Cover, and Hold on.”  Last year, 10.6 million Californians participated in the Great Shake Out and as of August 31 of this year, 7.9 million have registered already.

The 2022 Shake Out drill will be the largest preparedness event in U.S. history. To participate, go to and pledge your family, school, business, or organization’s participation in the drill. It is free and registered participants will receive information on how to plan a drill and how to create a dialogue with others about earthquake preparedness.  All organizers ask is that participants register (so they can be counted and receive communications), and at the minimum practice "drop, cover, and hold on" at the specified time.

Participating in the Great Shake Out is only a five-minute commitment for something that can save your life.  It all begins with registering, which is free and open to everyone.  For more information, visit
