What is Needed
No business can be opened for operation until both a Certificate of Occupancy and a Business License is obtained. Both of these forms are required to be posted on the business premises. Periodic inspections by the city will be conducted to ensure continued compliance with the Monterey Park Municipal Code and other applicable laws.
To start a business in Monterey Park, you will need to:
Step 1: Determine business zone and obtain an application for Certification of Occupancy and an information sheet from the Planning Division of the Development Services.
Step 2: Check the safety requirements of the building of your proposed business site or schedule a building inspection with the Building and Safety Division.
Step 3: Complete a business license application, alarm system application (if applicable), and pay the required fees (Certificate of Occupancy and Business License applications) at the Business License counter.
Step 4: Submit the pink copy of the Business License application and schedule a fire inspection with Fire Prevention.
Remember to notify the Business Licensing Division of any changes in the operation of your business that affect the status of your business license. This applies to the closure of a business, change in location, change in ownership, number of employees, etc.
Please also remember to file your sales tax reports to the State Board of Equalization, which must be done monthly. If your corporate office files all sales tax reports, they must identify the money made to the offices located in Monterey Park. If they do not identify the City of Monterey Park, it will be improperly recorded to the wrong city.
