What is Autism?


The CDC defines autism as:

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges. There is often nothing about how people with ASD look that sets them apart from other people, but people with ASD may communicate, interact, behave, and learn in ways that are different from most other people. The learning, thinking, and problem-solving abilities of people with ASD can range from gifted to severely challenged. Some people with ASD need a lot of help in their daily lives; others need less.

The MPPD Autism Awareness Project is aimed at raising public attention to develop an understanding of the condition, acceptance, and appreciation of difference in others.

Autism affects an estimated 1 in 44 children in the United States today. The puzzle pattern reflects the complexity of the autism spectrum. The different colors and shapes represent the diversity of the people and families living with the condition. The Light It Up Blue campaign is intended to raise awareness for autism awareness month, April.

The Monterey Park Police Department would like to honor those with autism, along with the families, teachers, therapists, doctors and health care providers, who dedicate themselves daily to help those with their unique challenges.

With the above purpose in mind, the Monterey Park Police Department and personnel would introduce the Autism Awareness Patch design. Patches will be available for sale to employees and the general public by mail at $12 each.

Proceeds after the initial cost will go directly to the Monterey Park community in the form of a donation to MERCI, a 501(c)(3) organization. Established in 1955, MERCI’s mission is to support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in maximizing their independence and in becoming productive, contributing members within the community. MERCI maintains two assisted living homes and a daytime service center here in Monterey Park.
