Senate Bill No. 415 (SB 415), the California Voter Participation Rights Act (California Election Code 14050-14057), which was approved by the Legislature and signed by the Governor in 2015, prohibits local governments from holding their elections other than on a statewide election date. To comply with SB 415, the Monterey Park City Council adopted Ordinance No. 2145 (PDF) changing the General Municipal Election from March in odd-numbered years to March in even-numbered years, to coincide with statewide election dates. The elections will be consolidated and administered by the Los Angeles County Registrar Recorder's office.
As a result of this change, current elected City officeholders will have their terms extended by 12 months.
The General Municipal Election currently scheduled for March 5, 2019 (currently held by Council Members Mitchell Ing, Stephen Lam and Teresa Real Sebastian), will be held on March 3, 2020.
The General Municipal Election currently scheduled for March 2, 2021, (currently held by Council Members Peter, Chan, Hans Liang, City Clerk Vincent Chang and City Treasurer Joseph Leon) will be held on March 8, 2022.
