City Council announces appointment of Inez Alvarez as Interim City Manager

At the June 7, 2023 City Council meeting, Mayor Jose Sanchez announced that City Manager Ron Bow would be retiring soon. The City Council also announced the appointment of Assistant City Manager Inez Alvarez as Interim City Manager. Ms. Alvarez has been part of Monterey Park’s executive leadership team since 2018 and the interim appointment will help maintain organizational consistency while a permanent appointment is being considered.

City Manager Bow officially announced his retirement date as July 7, 2023. His retirement caps nearly 17 years of overall public service to the community of Monterey Park. The City Council wishes to express its deepest gratitude to Mr. Bow for his exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to the community.

“For over six years, Ron has served as the City Manager and that stability has yielded strong results for our community,” said Mayor Jose Sanchez. “On behalf of our City Council, I thank him for his many contributions to our community and to City staff, and wish him well in his retirement.”

Mr. Bow has served as City Manager since December 2016, overseeing numerous initiatives and projects that have contributed to the city's growth and prosperity. During his tenure, Mr. Bow has provided exemplary service as he carried out the responsibilities in providing the overall direction and coordination of city operations and carrying out policies and priorities of elected officials to achieve and maintain the improvement of Monterey Park’s municipal services and overall quality of life. Mr. Bow has also led the City through some of the most incredibly challenging times in our nation’s history, such as navigating through a global pandemic and responding to the tragic mass casualty incident of January 21, 2023, all while maintaining and delivering quality services to the Monterey Park community.

"I would like to express my deepest appreciation to the residents, staff, and City Council of Monterey Park for the privilege to serve as City Manager," said Ron Bow. "It has been an honor to work alongside such dedicated individuals and witness the remarkable progress we have achieved together. I am confident that the City will continue to thrive under the guidance of its exceptional staff and elected officials."

City Council will honor Mr. Bow’s service at the Wednesday, July 5, 2023, 6:30 p.m. City Council meeting at City Hall, 320 W. Newmark Avenue. As a nod to Ron’s Hawaiian heritage, attendees are invited to wear Hawaiian or tropical attire. This gathering will provide an opportunity for the community to express their gratitude and bid farewell to a true community leader.
