Classic film enthusiasts are invited to a special film screening featuring Academy Award nominee Piper Laurie at the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library. After the screening, join film historian Foster Hirsch who will lead a discussion with Ms. Laurie about the film. This event is free to the public and will take place in the Friends Room on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at 1:30 p.m.
The library is not able to disclose the title due to licensing restrictions, but the 1961 drama stars Paul Newman and Piper Laurie, with Newman as an ambitious small time pool hustler trying to make it into the big leagues.
Piper Laurie has been nominated for three Academy Awards, nine Emmy Awards, and four Golden Globe Awards, and has won both an Emmy and a Golden Globe. Ms. Laurie’s film credits include “Carrie,” “The Hustler,” “Children of a Lesser God,” and her extensive television credits include “Days of Wine and Roses,” “Twin Peaks” and “The Thorn Birds.”
Foster Hirsch is a professor of film at Brooklyn College and has authored 15 books on film and theater. Mr. Hirsch graduated from Mark Keppel High School and was a patron on the opening day of the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library.
