Celebrate Women’s History Month at Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library with the Speaker Series featuring women filmmakers and authors throughout the month of March 2019 on Sundays at 2 p.m. in the Friends Room. 

Meet film director Betsy Kalin on Sunday, March 3, 2019 and see her award-winning documentary film, “East LA Interchange,” the story of how the largest and busiest freeway interchange system in the nation impacted the lives of Boyle Heights residents and created a neighborhood of community activism. 

Film director Alessandra Gunz introduces her documentary film, “The Brick People,” on Sunday, March 10. The film explores the legacy of Mexican immigrants who worked at the Simons Brickyard #3 in Los Angeles during the early 20th century and made the bricks that built Los Angeles. 

Author and Holocaust survivor Hava Ben-Zvi discusses her autobiographical book, “We Who Lived: Two Teenagers in World War II Poland” on Sunday, March 17. Ms. Ben-Zvi shares her experiences before and after the war in this personal journey of determination, strength, and resilience. 

Meet film director Larissa Lam on Sunday, March 24 and see her documentary film, “Finding Cleveland,” The film takes an emotional journey with Charles Chiu and his family when they visit Cleveland, Mississippi to learn about the father and grandfather they never knew and uncovers the seldom told history of the early Chinese immigrants in the Mississippi Delta during the time of segregation and the Chinese Exclusion Act. 

Learn about the history of Laura Scudder, a food industry pioneer who directed the development of a successful food company from the 1920s to the 1950s in Monterey Park. Her local history story will be presented on Sunday, March 31 through the voices of outstanding women recognized for their community service in Monterey Park. The Women’s History Month program series is sponsored by the Friends of the Monterey Park Library. For more information about the programs contact the Reference Desk at 626-307-1368.
