[ARCHIVED] Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library invites the public to two special programs in September and October to celebrate the history and culture of generations of Hispanic and Latino Americans who have enriched our nation and society.

Author Miluka Rivera will discuss her book, “Hollywood Latinos Offspring,” on Sunday, September 23 at 2 p.m. in the Friends Room. The book includes the stories and careers of notable Puerto Rican and Latino-American actors and actresses including Anthony Quinn, Rita Moreno, Ricardo Montalban, and other generations of Hispanic Americans who have enriched the nation and society with their contributions to film, television and Broadway. Miluka Rivera is an actress, activist, journalist and poet. She is the author of several books documenting Latino contributions to American Cinema. Her articles have appeared in Hispanic Magazine, Los Angeles Times, and other publications. As a Hollywood correspondent she has interviewed celebrities while covering the Oscars, Latin ACE Awards, Grammys and SAG Awards. The author’s book will be available for purchase and signing following her presentation at the program.

Local author Gene Aguilera will discuss his new book, “Latino Boxing in Southern California,” on Sunday, October 21 at 2 p.m. in the Friends Room. The book is a tribute to world-class Latino boxing legends from the United States, Mexico, and Central America whose talents and bouts were showcased at the Olympic Auditorium, Main Street Gym and the Forum. The book is a sequel to the author’s first book“Mexican American Boxing in Los Angeles.” Aguilera’s lifelong passion for the sport has earned him awards and induction into several boxing hall of fame societies. A local boxer will attend the program and will be available to answer questions about the sport. Aguilera’s books will be available for purchase and signing following his presentation.
