Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library will welcome actress Millie Perkins and film historian Foster Hirsch at the 6th Annual Classic Film Program on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at 2 p.m. in the Friends Room. The special event includes an introduction by Foster Hirsch, a film screening, and an interview with Millie Perkins discussing her role in the 1959 film classic as Anne Frank, a 13 year old girl who keeps a diary journaling her experiences while hiding with her Jewish family for two years in Nazi-occupied Netherlands during World War II.

Film director George Stevens selected Millie Perkins to play the role of Anne Frank from her modeling photos. She was offered the role at the age of 19 with no previous acting experience. The actress received positive reviews for her portrayal of Anne Frank in the film drama, a role of a lifetime that changed her life. The film won three awards at the 32nd Academy Awards in 1960 for Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction-Interior, Black and White, and Best Costume Design Black and White. Millie Perkins pursued other leading film roles during her acting career and later appeared in television movies and series.

Following the film screening, Foster Hirsch, a film historian who specializes in the Hollywood studio era, 1930-1960s, will interview Millie Perkins. Hirsh is the author of 16 books on subjects related to theater and film. Among these are "The Dark Side of the Screen," "Kurt Weill: On Stage From Berlin to Broadway," "Public Enemies: The Golden Age of the Gangster Film," and "Detours and Lost Highways: A Map of Neo Noir." A native of California, Hirsh is a 1961 graduate of Mark Keppel High School, earned a B.A. degree from Stanford University and holds M.F.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University. He is a professor at Brooklyn College, New York, and teaches courses that include Director’s Cinema, Cultural Perspectives, Film Technology & Aesthetics at the School of Visual, Media, and Performing Arts.

The classic film program is sponsored by the Historical Society of Monterey Park and the Friends of the Monterey Park Library. For more information about the event, contact the library at 626-307-1368 and/or follow on Twitter @MontereyParkLib
