On October 17, 2017 at 05:29 a.m., the Monterey Park Fire Department responded to 301 East Garvey Avenue for a structure fire. This location was the site of a previous commercial strip mall fire which occurred December 15, 2016.
Monterey Park fire units with the assistance of Alhambra, San Gabriel, Montebello and Los Angeles County fire departments responded to the incident.
Upon arrival, Monterey Park fire units encountered a large rubbish pile fully engulfed in flames. The rubbish pile was the remaining debris from the previous commercial strip mall fire. The rubbish pile fire spread to the remaining three businesses left standing after that commercial strip mall fire. Those units became fully involved and eventually collapsed. Exposures were protected to the east and the north of the incident and no other units sustained damage. An aggressive fire attack was established with six engine companies and three ladder trucks that enabled the fire to be brought under control at 0650 hrs. .
No injuries were reported to civilians or fire personnel. The estimated dollar amount of damage is to be determined. The Monterey Park Fire Department Fire Investigation Unit investigated the fire and the cause is still under investigation.
