Nine, 54-Hour Closures of Northbound I-710 Begin September 23

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 7 today reminded motorists that all lanes of northbound Interstate 710 (Long Beach Freeway) will be closed for nine weekends this fall as crews place concrete slabs as part of an ongoing pavement replacement project. Northbound I-710 will be closed between Interstate 5 (Santa Ana Freeway) and State Route 60 (Pomona Freeway) each weekend from 10 p.m. on Fridays until 4 a.m. on Mondays.

The first weekend of work will occur September 23 to 26 and repeat each successive weekend except the weekends of October 7 to 10, October 28 to 31, November 11 to 14 and November 25 to 28, until the weekend of December 16 to 19, weather permitting.

Detours will be posted. The northbound I-710 connector to northbound I-5 will be open. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and encouraged to use Interstate 110 or Interstate 605 as alternates. The local street detour for those headed to East Los Angeles will follow Olympic Boulevard and Eastern Avenue. (see map)

One slab is composed of 30 panels. Crews will be installing up to 90 concrete panels each weekend. Panels range from 14 to 47 feet wide. Large cranes will be situated across lanes will be used to swing panels into place and concrete pumps will be used to grout them.

As part of a $120 million pavement replacement project on the Long Beach Freeway (Interstate 710) from the Century Freeway (Interstate 105) to the San Bernardino Freeway (Interstate 10), this project is installing precast concrete panels as well as concrete slabs in various traffic lanes and locations, upgrading the median barrier and constructing maintenance pullouts along the route to enhance safety for maintenance crews.

Shimmick/Myers and Sons, JV Construction on the project, which began in August 2012 and is expected to be completed in 2017.
