[ARCHIVED] MPK Bruggemeyer Library Hosts Author and Filmmaker Kay Mouradian

Author and filmmaker, Kay Mouradian will talk about her book, “My Mother’s Voice” on Sunday, May 31 at 2 p.m. at the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library. The book tells the story of the Armenian Genocide during World War I through the story of Mouradian’s mother, Flora and her journey to survive as a fourteen- year- old during the Armenian deportations in 1915 and later finding her way to America to begin a new life.

“I wish I had known more about my mother Flora. She was 18 when she came to America in 1920 to marry my father, a man she knew only from a photograph. Becoming an orphan after losing her family in the Armenian Genocide, my mother took a chance that the man in the picture would take care of her and I am a witness to say that he did,” said Mouradian. The idea for the book came later when Mouradian’s mother became ill and urged her to write about her mother’s past. To preserve her mother’s legacy, Mouradian published the book in 2013 and transformed the book into a short 25-minute documentary film.

The program is part of an ongoing library series featuring authors, books, and films about real life stories. The author will screen the documentary film and discuss the book bringing to light during this 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, the effects of war on Armenian families in Ottoman Turkey. “The story will appeal not only to young adult readers but also to adults wanting to learn more about the history of the Armenian Genocide,” said Mouradian who holds a doctorate in education from Nova Southeastern University and degrees from Boston University and UCLA. The author’s book will be available for purchase at the event with book signing.
