[ARCHIVED] MPK Bruggemeyer Library, Rep. Judy Chu and Calif. Controller Betty Yee Host Free Tax Prep Event

The Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library hosted a free tax preparation and filing event for individuals with household incomes of $53,000 or less on Wednesday, April 1, 2015. The event was made possible by the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) and California State Controller Betty Yee’s Office.

The free tax preparation event was one of more than 150 VITA events happening across the Los Angeles area this tax season. Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27); Monterey Park Mayor Hans Liang; Thomas Wong, External Affairs Liaison, Office of State Controller; and City Librarian Norma Arvizu spoke at the event that offered free assistance to low income individuals, persons with disabilities, the elderly and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their returns.

“Thanks to Congresswoman Judy Chu and State Controller Betty Yee for hosting the VITA event. The program provides important support for many people in our community that face problems understanding income tax and filing requirements,” said Mayor Liang.

“Filing income taxes in the United States should not feel like an intimidating task. With programs such as VITA, the tax filing process is more inviting and approachable. In our community where we have a large immigrant population applying for citizenship annually through our library literacy program, this additional service the library is now offering through VITA provides transitioning to the American culture a welcoming passage,” said City Librarian Norma Arvizu.
