Enforcement / Education Operations

DUI Checkpoints

The Monterey Park Police Department conducts regularly scheduled driving under the influence checkpoints throughout the city. This is an ongoing education and enforcement program designed to apprehend drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Motorists passing through these checkpoints are screened for signs of intoxication and for driver's licenses. Drivers found violating any applicable California Penal or Vehicle Codes are arrested or cited and may have their vehicles impounded

Pedestrian Decoy Operation

The Monterey Park Police Department conducts regularly scheduled Pedestrian Decoy Operations throughout the city. This is an ongoing education and enforcement program designed to cite drivers who fail to stop for pedestrians who are crossing in a crosswalk. Decoy / plainclothes officers cross the streets in marked or unmarked crosswalks. Drivers who are in violation of the vehicle code for failing to stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk are issued a citation. This operation is designed to reduce pedestrian involved traffic collisions.

School Bus Operation

The Monterey Park Police Department has implemented a school bus enforcement detail. This detail is designed to cite drivers who fail to stop for the flashing red lights on a school bus. A school bus is used on various streets with a decoy student. Drivers who fail to stop for the school bus with the flashing red lights activated, are violating the law and may be issued a citation. The overall goal of this detail is to enhance the safety of our school children.

Traffic Education

Safe Moves City

Traffic officers and parking enforcement officers are trained in the presentation and hands-on demonstration of a customized Safe Moves City program. This program is designed for preschool to lower grade elementary school aged children. The Safe Moves City is a miniature city block setting. Within this city setting, children learn traffic safety including: pedestrian safety, bicycle safety, and passenger safety in vehicles. The interactive playing while learning method has made learning traffic safety fun. Currently, schools in the city are scheduled each year for the presentation. Groups or organizations interested in a Safe Moves City presentation may call the Traffic Bureau at 626-307-1240.
