Step 3

Once a number has been assigned to your certificate of occupancy application from the Building and Safety Division (Step 2), take the application to the Business License counter (located on the first floor next to the cashier) to fill out your business license application. Along with your paperwork, bring the following information:
  • Owner’s social security number, or Business Federal Identification Number (if any)
  • Driver’s license
  • State identification number (if you have employees)
  • Resale number (obtained from the State Board of Equalization)
  • All owners names, titles, home addresses, and home telephone numbers
  • Total number of employees (both full-time and part-time)
  • Total number of professionals (as outlined in the code) with documentation showing area of expertise, such as state license, diploma, or certification certificate
  • Restaurants will need a Los Angeles County Health Certificate
License Fees
After staff has checked your application forms, the license fees will be calculated. There may be other fees depending upon the type of business you will be operating. Once you have paid for your certificate of occupancy application fee and business license fees, you will be given a receipt for both. You will also be given the pink copy of the business license application to take to Fire Prevention (Step 4) and a copy of the certificate of occupancy application to return to the Building and Safety counter to receive the certificate of occupancy. This certificate must be posted on the business premises.

If applicable, the application for Police Alarm Systems must be completed and handed in with the business license application.
