Step 1

The Planning Division determines whether your business conforms to the specific zone in which you wish to operate. Staff will provide you with a certificate of occupancy application and information sheet to be completed. You will also be asked questions to determine if the area is appropriate for your business such as:
  • What kind of business will you be conducting?
  • How many employees will you be hiring?
  • What kind of clientele / customers will you have?
  • Business hours of operation?
  • What types of service will you provide: wholesale, retail, office?
  • How many parking spaces are available?
Once you have been given zoning approval, you will be asked to complete the certificate of occupancy application.

Information Needed
As the business owner, you should personally come in to fill out the paperwork. If a corporation owns the business, use the corporation as the business owner. If the business has a DBA (“doing business as”), use the DBA as the business name. Other information needed to complete the form:
  • Square footage of the building (space you intend to occupy)
  • Building address (including unit number, if applicable)
  • Landlord’s name, address, and telephone number
  • Prior business at the location (if known)
